The Girl in the Spider’s Web review – Mr T’s take
Review: This movie is a sort of a sequel to David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, a modern-day cinematic gem. Audiences going in to watch this movie believing they’ll be captivated in the same way as the 2011 film as in for a real disappointment.
While Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth Salander, a brilliant antisocial hacker and investigator, humanised the character and in my opinion is the contemporary embodiment of a female hero, Claire Foy’s Salander shuns all that and feels straight out of a CW superhero show. She is Oliver Queen and Felicity Smoak rolled into one. Daniel Craig’s portrayal of Mikael Blomkvist was a layered one and one of his career-best roles, but here the journalist is as unidimensional as it gets. And while the cinematography in Fincher’s film was both haunting and epic, Álvarez subjects us to cliched car chases and Russian assassins. There is also the token guy from NSA with a saviour complex.
This isn’t for fans of the original Millennium Trilogy either. The novel is dumbed down to an extent that it gives Suicide Squad a run for its money for in terms of worst adapted screenplay.
My rating is 1.5/5.
Who should watch this: Fans of intelligent thrillers will hate this one. I wouldn’t recommend this unless you need to see for yourself how bad the sequel to Fincher’s masterpiece is. Watch The Punisher, Jessica Jones, Gone Girl, Se7en or Kill Bill instead.
