Avengers: Endgame review – Mr T’s take

An emotional, ambitious and blockbuster movie made for die-hard fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This Avengers: Endgame review is brought to you by AboutFlick’s Mr T.

Director: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo

11 years (and 22 films) is a long time to invest in a movie franchise. And I mean literally invest here. Rs 4000-5000 at least. Like some of you, I have watched all the twenty-two movies since Iron Man in 2008 to Avengers: Endgame at the theatre. And I think it has paid off. What Marvel has managed to deliver is a successful love letter to the fans in an epic finale.

In the first third of the movie, we find the survivors dealing with the aftermath of Avengers: Infinity War in different ways and how they have changed. It’s a rare departure from your typical MCU movie as it explores the human cost of being a superhero. Thor appears as an alcoholic troll, Hawkeye is coping with the loss of his family and Tony Stark has secluded himself in an isolated cabin. After the 1-hour mark, the story finally kicks into gear and the remaining Avengers seize an opportunity to save the world, or well, at least half of it.

Robert Downey Jr does his signature Elon Musk impression, but his character has come a long way since his shallow Iron Man 3 days

When you have a diverse cast as the MCU, it’s difficult to focus on every single character. So, the movie mainly focuses on the original Avengers: Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye. Robert Downey Jr does his signature Elon Musk impression, but his character has come a long way since his shallow Iron Man 3 days. Thor retains his sarcasm and humour from Ragnarok and Captain America seems burdened by regrets over the years. I won’t spoil anything about Hulk’s character, but all I can say is that we find an entirely different Hulk from the last time we saw him. Rocket Raccoon and Ant-Man have an awesome screen presence, and the exchanges between Black Widow and Hawkeye are emotionally satisfying.

The film definitely suffers from pacing issues and the slow start could have been made a bit more compact. Without revealing too much, the plot device they used to drive the story forward is a bit gimmicky and done to its death. It opens the door to paradoxes which I’m sure the internet will love tearing apart in forums and comments. Fans of CW’s The Flash might know what I’m talking about.

Now, I’ll be doing a disservice to Avengers: Endgame if I review it purely from a critic’s standpoint. So, let’s talk about what this movie actually is. It is a movie for the fans, by the fans and the Russo Brothers reward loyalty for sticking with the MCU. They expertly juggle humour with the grim circumstances the Avengers find themselves in.
