A Star Is Born review – Mr S’s take
Review: How do you judge a movie that has already been made thrice before? And we Indians already saw a different version of it in Aashiqui 2 where Aditya Roy Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor portrayed the characters of a seasoned singer and a struggling artist with such grace.
Here, the story begins with Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) looking for liquor after his recent stage performance when he meets Ally in a drag queen bar. Recently being out of a relationship, Ally goes out with Jack and ends up singing to each other. Fascinated by Ally’s talent, Jackson coaxes her into the spotlight, and soon, Ally’s career takes off. As mentioned beautifully by Jackson’s brother Bobby (Sam Elliot), the caterpillar becomes the butterfly. With the emerging success of his now wife, Jackson dives deep into his world of inner demons drinking and taking drugs. Embarrassing Ally in front of others, Jackson goes to Rehab centre which would have helped, but certainly, Rez’s statement didn’t. Lady Gaga obviously has an incredible voice and Cooper held his own surprisingly well.
But the movie title is more justifiable for Cooper as a director than Gaga’s character of Ally. The Directorial debut is passionately shot and thoughtfully carried out, making it one of the best debuts ever. As a fan of musicals, the songs did not appeal to me very much, except the first one sung by Gaga and Cooper together.
Rating: My rating is 3.5/5 judging only by Cooper and Gaga’s solid performances.
Who should watch this: If you like musicals and biopics of musicians like Ray, I’m Not There, La La Land and Crazy Heart, this movie is definitely for you.
