Luka Chuppi review – Mr S’s take

Review: If you have seen the trailer of Luka Chuppi, starring Kartik Aryan and Kriti Sanon, you don’t really need to watch the movie. For a movie which insists on a storyline based on live-in relationships, it fails to explore the concept. According to Luka Chuppi, if you stay with your partner for twenty days, make instant noodles, indulge in some lovemaking and enjoy two cups of tea, you are ready for marriage. I’m not exaggerating. For many youngsters, Luka Chuppi will be their first exposure to the concept of a live-in relationship, and I wish the filmmakers would have taken this responsibility more seriously.
The film struggles from the beginning to make the audiences realize that the movie’s main plot is about live-in relationships. Kartik Aryan as a local journalist sets out to interview various people about their views on the same. And due to some random reason, he is joined by Kriti Sanon’s Rashmi. Like other Bollywood rom-coms, these two people fall in love with each other due to ludicrous reasons. When Guddu proposes to Rashmi to tie the knot, she realizes that they don’t know each other too well and that they should be in a live-in relationship to do the same. Then Abbas proposes that they should flee Mathura, and start living together in Gwalior so that their families do not find out. Aparshakti Khurana, who plays Abbas here is at his worst energy level.
If you think that the stupidity has ended, let me tell you that Luka Chuppi doesn’t end disappointing here. Not only the movie shows Guddu’s family mistaking him as married, but also confused when they think that he’s trying to remarry. After a series of other ridiculous subplots, which certainly cures your insomnia, the only thing you would want is for all the actors to literally play Luka Chuppi in the movie for as long as possible.
When it comes to giving facial expressions, Kartik Aryan is the most consistent there is. And not in a good way. A tightened jaw, one risen eyebrow and a haircut that resembles a crow’s nest is what comes to my mind whenever I hear the name Kartik Aryan nowadays. Kriti Sanon repeats her Bareli Ki Barfi act with even lesser emotions this time. Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khuranna are the best parts of the movie, and yet they don’t exert enough pressure to pull this movie to success. In other words, Luka Chuppi along with 5 remix songs is a recycled product of old Bollywood movies with the word ‘live-in’ in it.
Rating: My rating for Luka Chuppi is a very generous 2/5.
Who should watch this: If you like old Govinda comedies which managed to make you laugh at the expense of your ignorance, you should definitely go for this movie.
